Hearing Loss in the Math Class

Click here to get hearing loss stats from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Take this statistic

About 2 percent of adults aged 45 to 54 have disabling hearing loss. The rate increases to 8.5 percent for adults aged 55 to 64. Nearly 25 percent of those aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent of those who are 75 and older have disabling hearing loss.

In a math class, you'll have to make some changes and adapt to make it appropriate for your students' learning needs. If there are 32 students in a classroom, you can use the stats provided in order to figure out how many students fall into each category. This will place 8 students in each age category. Your students will need to find out how many of each age group has a disabling hearing loss.

You can factor in the dangers of high noise levels and change the age groups. Click here for a link informing of the dangers of high noise levels. If you play music at a 100dB level for 15 minutes, you can begin losing hearing. At what length of time listening to 50dB are you safe? 85dB?
